Media tycoon and founder of Ramoji Film City, Ramoji Rao, dies at age 87

NEW DELHI: Ramoji Rao, the founder of Ramoji Film City and head of the ETV Network, passed away in the early hours of Saturday at Star Hospital in Hyderabad, Telangana. Rao, who was 87, died at 3:45 am while under medical care.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over Rao’s passing and remembered his significant contributions to India’s media industry.

In a tweet, PM Modi stated, “The demise of Shri Ramoji Rao Garu is deeply saddening. He was a visionary who transformed Indian media. His substantial contributions have made a lasting impact on journalism and the film industry. His remarkable efforts established new benchmarks for innovation and excellence in the media and entertainment sectors.”

“Shri Ramoji Rao Garu was deeply committed to India’s progress. I have been fortunate to have had several interactions with him and to have learned from his insight. My condolences go out to his family, friends, and numerous admirers during this challenging time. Om Shanti,” he added.
Senior BJP leader G Kishan Reddy also mourned the loss, posting, “Distressed by the departure of Shri Ramoji Rao Garu. His outstanding contributions to Telugu media and journalism are noteworthy. My heartfelt condolences to his family members. Om Shanti.”

Ramoji Rao was an entrepreneur, film producer, and businessman. He led the Ramoji Group, which included a variety of enterprises, such as Ramoji Film City, known as the world’s largest film production facility. The group also owned the Eenadu newspaper, the ETV Network of TV channels, and Usha Kiran Movies, a film production company.

The esteemed entrepreneur and media tycoon played a pivotal role in shaping the Indian entertainment and media landscape with his innovative ventures.
