Dehradun: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is set to be implemented to enhance traffic management in Uttarakhand. Traffic Director IPS Arun Mohan Joshi announced that new software for the traffic police is being developed by the Orchid Group, which will incorporate existing hardware and solutions related to traffic management.
The software will assist police in identifying traffic disruptions during large-scale events, such as weekend traffic pressure, major festivals, protests, accidents, and encroachments. Joshi stated that this system will significantly aid in managing traffic.
Monitoring Crowds and Pilgrims
Joshi further explained that the software will track the number of crowds and pilgrims during the Char Dham Yatra and other tourist sites in Uttarakhand. Millions of devotees visit the state’s four sacred shrines and various tourist locations each year, putting significant pressure on the roads. With the help of AI, the software will accurately measure vehicle congestion and pedestrian numbers in real-time, making it easier to identify the causes of traffic jams and redirect traffic to alternative routes.
Development of a Mobile App
In conjunction with the software, a mobile app will also be developed for public use. This app will provide users with timely information related to road traffic and send notifications about alternative routes. Additionally, it will inform travelers about parking availability, helping to alleviate traffic congestion on the roads.
Data-Driven Operations
The software will be integrated with traffic signals, CCTV cameras, video messaging displays, and radar systems installed on the roads. It will autonomously operate traffic signals using data through an AI system and will be capable of disseminating information via video messaging.
Arun Mohan Joshi indicated that the agency responsible for developing the software will soon provide details about the costs involved based on the state’s needs.
This new system represents a significant step toward improving traffic management, enhancing both safety and convenience on the roads of Uttarakhand.
