Uttarakhand: During The Char Dham Yatra, More Than 50  Pilgrims Died, Mostly From “Heart Attacks”

Since May 10, over two weeks ago, when the Chardham Yatra began in Uttarakhand, more than fifty pilgrims have lost their lives.

“52 Chardham pilgrims have died so far, mostly due to heart attacks,” stated Garhwal Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey at a press conference here on Friday. The majority of them were older than 60.

He stated that three devotees perished at Gangotri, twelve in Yamunotri, fourteen in Badrinath, and twenty-three in Kedarnath.

It is now required for devotees over 50 to undergo medical examination. According to him, pilgrims are being screened while en route to the Himalayan temples, and if they are deemed not medically fit enough, they are being urged not to proceed.

But after completing a paperwork, individuals can proceed if they are still determined to continue the yatra.
He added that nine lakh 67 thousand 302 people have visited the Chardham thus far, and that ongoing efforts are being made to further strengthen the Chardham Yatra arrangements.

Pandey said that at all four pilgrimages, the yatra is proceeding without incident.

Medical screening for devotees above 50 years of age has been made mandatory, officials said.
